Sea/Waterway Transport

Incoterms for Sea and Inland Waterway Transport

These four Incoterms 2020 rules are exclusively for sea and inland waterway transport:

  • FAS - Free Alongside Ship (named port of shipment)
  • FOB - Free On Board (named port of shipment)
  • CFR - Cost and Freight (named port of destination)
  • CIF - Cost, Insurance and Freight (named port of destination)

Important: These rules should NOT be used for containerized cargo. For containers, use FCA instead of FOB, and CIP instead of CIF.

These rules are suitable for:

  • Bulk cargo (grain, coal, oil, etc.)
  • Break-bulk cargo
  • Non-containerized goods loaded directly onto vessels
  • Inland waterway barges
